winter tuning - we're back!

Sorry to have been inactive over the summer, we took our dancing shoes overseas and discovered some new talent out there, which we will share in due time. But for now, stay tuned because winter is here and there are many exciting things coming up.

First off - District 36 is open - at last! They claim house music has a new home, but we shall see. Resident DJs Taimur & Fahad of BLKMarket Membership never disappoint, and Taimur is the musical director and we believe in him. Speaking of Taimur, check out his new podcast via Autobrennt, which you can download on iTunes, but also here

About 10 days ago Richie was in town and we didn't miss it, we hope you didn't either. Gaiser ruled the dancefloor before Richie took stage - or rather tables. We are big fans of Richie and Gaiser, check out a little playlist we made:
taste of Richie&Gaiser

The extraordinary was the music, but so was the crowd that was pulsating at 3am on a Monday morning at Highline Ballroom. Oh how we've missed New York...

Before reaching November, we listened many other noteworthy beats, some of them include Phillip Jung, Memek, Prince Language, Slow Hands. Unfortunately we missed Timo Maas, did you go? Give us your review, we were curious about where Timo has been up to and will soon catch up on his new disc Balance 017.

Weekend is already here and here's what we have on our minds:

Thursday, Dec 2 - Verboten presents Off-Key with Memek (minimoo) and Cem&RG (sleep is commercial) at the Counting Room in Williamsburg

Friday, Dec 3 - BLKMarket & D36 presents Magda and Marc Houle at District 36 (on W36 between 5th and 6th Ave)

Saturday, Dec 4 - this is the big night, we're celebrating Fahad's birthday at Santos Party House with none other than some his (and our) favorite djs. We will be dancing to Isolee and DJ Koze, and we can't be any more excited!

Velvet Cousters

Last Thursday we had the opportunity to break away from bomb scares in Time square to an actual sold out "Massive Attack" show. With the new album on the shelves , massive attack played a long set of mostly songs from their classics, like "Karma Coma","Angel","Inertia Creaps"... Thus letting us get lost in what you might call nostalgia. This being the second massive attack concert I've been to, it was no surprise having Horace Andy appear on the stage. Though, I have to say what what topped of the night for me was the songs from their new album, which they saved till last.

If these songs don't make you go out and buy "Heligoland" I don't know what will.

This post wouldn't be complete without a remix of their new song - Paradise Circus.

Also don't miss "Splitting The Atom" Featuring Horace Andy.

musical movements - thursday edition

Many artists I've been delaying sharing with you guys and gals, and Thursday just so happens to be my favorite day of the week: unpretentiously authentic, immaturely ripe, naughty, unruly and early; August in a June disguise...

Hailing from Berlin, today's first musical guest is Mike Shannon of CYN, showing his Italian escapades in this panoramic mix, please click on the Audio link:

Watergate

Second is Steffano Ritteri, aka SOLO, who is one of the most exciting house producer and DJs out there with his ever unique melodies and grooves, these 2 new midget house mixes toll for the Thursday party crew:

Midgetmix 2

Is it time yet?

Well, I'm sure you're already making plans for the weekend, scrolling the blogs and seeing what's going on, maybe checking the prices on flights for a quick get away, Tribeca film festival perhaps. If you have the urge to indulge yourself a great performance you've come to the right place. (This is what we're are all about, no?)

"The XX" is lucky enough to be playing at "Le Poisson Rouge" this Thursday the 22nd. Why don't we make them feel lucky and show up as the best crowd they've played to. As setophiles it's our duty.

See you there.

Speak of the Devil...

Just recently , we had put up a post, about the good old days when Danish Dj's would spin the vinyl till the speakers wore out (see here ). Well looks like it's that time again.

Trentemøller is back at Cielo tonight. Come out everyone, this is not a set to miss.

NEW: amazing mix

as the Weekend approaches...

...here's a good way to make up for those of us who missed the WMC this year:

Friday & Saturday nights Armin van Buuren will be rocking Roseland Ballroom

AND

BLKMarket Membership, our resident savior, presents MOBILEE Showcase headlining the whole crew of Anja Schneider, Sebo K and Pan Pot on Saturday night. Pan-pot will be going on for long hours for their extended set; and among our favorites - Taimur & Fahad, will be opening up the evening.
Who needs their brains rocked out?!
Check out RA for tickets and don't forget to RSVP to the BLKMarket Membership to find out the secret location of the party.
hush hush - but I hear the party is in SoHo this time

French Tuesday's missing the French.

So it's Thursday so you might be wondering why we're talking about Tuesday. Well recently, I had the chance to attend a French Tuesday party were one could experience everything that isn't French. Wine or cheese weren't on the list neither was good French ambient/electro which was overridden by flamenco and salsa. However the point of this post isn't to ridicule French Tuesday's but rather to tip my hat to those French musicians who are an import to be cherished.

A recent favorite that shouldn't be passed is Saycet, which forms a beautiful bridge between "The Album Leaf" and "M83" (Also french? great scott!). Their new album "Through the Window" surely flows in a much softer direction, making it feel like a soft towel that just came out of the dryer put around your head. Almost preparing you for the soft spring breeze's that will flow through your window in the days to come.

Check out their myspace

I know we've already posted about saycet featuring opal but they definitely deserver more attention.

something a bit ... different

I can see this being re-mixed.re-mastered and hitting the clubs this summer : )

I told you so.

A deep cut can never feel so good.

Going back even further in time, I remember working till the morning in denmark waiting for the sun come up only to see that it really doesn't come up. Imagine the disappointment! Now in the background add the most popular Scandinavian electro you can think of. No , I'm not talking about røyskopp. It does give whole different "edge" to the whole situation. Turning the melancholy and fatigue into a minimal tattoo that you carry on with your soul.

I've yet to see these gals live but I know it would be one hell of a show.

Put on your headphones

Recently I was reminded of the incredible set that took place 2 years ago at Cielo NY by Trentemoller. As the Danish disk jockey extraordinaire took the table he mixed the deep bass driven tunes to the pulsating LED's on the walls.

My wish is for more artists to revive Cielo from the decline it's fallen into and also just melt our bones.

smooth like electro -trance on a Thursday

Nothing like getting hit in the face with a smooth eclectic beat from france on a thursday afternoon.

sayCet is the culprit today. As the minimal beats flow with the smooth vocals you feel a certain serenity coming down. Though this serenity will do a lot more than make you want to sleep.

Thanks to Opalowsky for the brilliant remix.

Check it out. Saycet - Opal (Error :: Love - Opalowsky Remix)

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

I heard the album just today, after stumbling upon the NPR link - thanks to my friend Robin. I've been telling myself, "spring is around the corner, almost here, almost almost...!" for the past 3 days, and today my self-pep-talk proved to be more than just wishful thinking and optimism: my wish came true. Regardless of the fact that it's supposed to snow tomorrow in NYC, this new Gorillaz album marks the beginning of spring for me, and it should for you too! many new collaborations with Snoop, Mos Def to the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music and Lou Reed - Plastic Beach feels like a cup of jungle juice served in a red plastic cup. I liked it, especially since I haven't had any for the past 5 years! After this one cup, I may go back to old habits ;)

You can listen to the album on here

and see the first video off the with a Bruce Willis cameo

Buddies

Buddies held their first event last night at Le Poisson Rouge with the premiere of the M.A.N.D.E.A.R. Project (Phillip from M.A.N.D.Y. and Matthew Dear of Audion) and who doesn't need good house music on a Wednesday night? NYC is a city where you can find good music every night of the week, but I have faith in Sigu and Buddies that these monthly gatherings will be ones not to miss. Next one is on March 24 - stay tuned for the details.

A dash of Matthew Dear:

and a sprinkle of Booka Shade & M.A.N.D.Y. collaboration if you haven't heard it already:
